123 Tune+ (BT) setup for 6Volt VW Beetle

    We have just received our 123Ignition system. The installation manual is not quite clear to us regarding the MAP input. Do we need to use Manifold vacuum for the standard MAP table input? Most older 6V VW systems only have Ported vacuum although we do have a manifold vacuum port fitted. Further, in the installation manual if says under Example 1 that the input values for advance need to be multiplied by 2, however the new Android APP seems to not have these multiplied by a factor of 2. Are the values for advance now directly per the crankshaft? Thank you

    We use the manifold vacuum. In the software of the TUNE USB and the TUNE+ (Bluetooth) we are always using the values for the advance directly from the crankshaft.

    A further question. The MAP curve........ When at full cruise, the advance is full, vacuum is high (let's say 20 inchesHG). When accelerating, this MAP curve adds another 10 degrees when the vacuum reduces towards atmospheric. When accelerating (press the pedal), the vacuum DECREASES and therefore the one-fits-all VW curves mean that the ignition advances. However, a richer fuel load burns faster, and does not need additional advance. If we think about a standard SVDA (single vacuum dual advance) distributor, when the accelerator pedal is pushed the vacuum reduces the advance. When cruising, the vacuum increases the advance. Am I wrong in thinking that the vacuum advance curve is incorrect in your example? A second comment....I have VDO tachometer, and it seems to run fine to about 2000 RPM but then starts reducing. Is there anything I should include so that the tachometer works? It is connected to coil -.

    Hi georg I am also wondering to have one installed in a 6v bug from 56 , i have a 30 HK and a 34 HK Engine. How Are your experience with it so far ? Can it fit both engines ? I am thinking off buying the one with Bluetooth 4 r v v and I would really be happy if your can tell me a little more .

    I am REALLY impressed with the 123Ignition system. I had to machine up a spacer for mine, and you perhaps need to as well because the stem is longer than the old distributor stem probably. 123 sell a Porsche 356 spacer ring on their shop which is essentially what I made. But the system is fantastic. Although there are some improvements that have been discussed regarding the APP, in terms of being able to save curves etc, the system has allowed me to get my 1200 CC engine running better than ever before and I know with some experimenting that I can get it even better. You perhaps need to make a manifold vacuum access though, depending on the carburettor you have. Older carbies only have ported vacuum (if you have the large vacuum can on your original distributor, you probably have ported vacuum above the butterfly I the carby). The 123 system allows you to change parameters to suit whatever your engine is, or whatever modifications have been made, or the wear of the engine. Standard systems do not allow much .adjustment at all. I would be happy to share more info on changes I made to the tuning curves, but I have not finished playing around yet. 10/10 from me....highly recommended

    Hi georg That is really nice to hear I would like to hear more , if have a stock 1200 engine with a 28 pic Karb but with a distributor from a 30 horse power engine.

    Your 28PICT carby only has ported vacuum, and you will notice the quite large vacuum advance can on your distributor. Google an article "Ported vacuum vs. manifold vacuum" which explains very well the differences. Ported vacuum is not sufficient for the 123Ignition. The 123Ignition system relies on manifold vacuum, so I made a direct manifold vacuum port on the inlet manifold. I also installed vacuum gauges so I can see what it happening there. It is very instructive. The difference in operation using the 123Ignition system is significant because you are able to fine-tune the tuning and MAP curves to suit the condition of your engine.
